About Us

Welcome to the virtual home of the The WHIPS (West Horsley Independent Players).

Founded in 1948, we are one of the liveliest and oldest organisations in the Horsley community, keeping theatre tradition alive in the village.  We are proud of our reputation for staging entertaining and technically ambitious productions. In past years we have performed French farces, classic whodunits, pantomimes and a premiere of Dads Army on Stage.

We stage two shows per year in the Spring and Autumn and every two years, a hugely popular pantomime. We are members of GATA (Guildford Amateur Theatre Association) and NODA (National Operatic and Dramatic Association) The Whips support both local and national charities with proceeds from our shows.

There are also two separate groups known collectively as WHIPS Youth Theatre: Whips Youth for teenagers; and Whippets for younger children.

Rehearsals are held within Horsley, either at the Village Hall, The WheelHouse, or the Canterbury Rooms, St Martins Church, (East Horsley). Performances take place at the West Horsley Village Hall on The Street, which is transformed into a theatre seating an audience of 130. Our performances are often staged as supper nights, which are proving increasingly popular.

Along a 500 yard stretch of The Street in West Horsley you will find all the facilities and locations needed to make up our thriving dramatic scene. The Coach House, our very own two-storey scenery store, workshop and paintshop (a paradise for craftsman) and the King William IV where we often retire after rehearsals, auditions and performances.

From time to time we have also performed at the Electric Theatre in Guildford and a variety of other local venues.
